Home & Kitchen

If you’re relocating to a smaller living space, mounting the television will free up a few good feet in your house or apartment. Upgrading your home’s decor could also be a primary reason for getting rid of the old TV stand, and placing the flat screen on the wall like a well-hung oil painting. The move toward wall-mounted flat screen TVs is partly due to changing perspectives on interior design, but mostly because TVs are merely getting thinner and lighter, making it much more possible to place them on the wall. And while you may not want to put that TV over your fireplace, mounting somewhere else might else on the wall creates space for the next time you want to pull out the boxing gloves and practice a few exercises!

An average TV stand can take up a lot of valuable space, and if you have small children or pets, the wires can create a bit of a hazard. VideoSecu ML531BE Articulating Wall Mount

Product Info
  • Heavy gauge steel mount supports TV up to 88 lbs. Compatible with VESA (mounting hole pattern)...
  • Tilt, pan and 20” pull out from the wall provides maximum viewing flexibility.
  • Low profile mount retracts to 2 1/2" and nests centered on the wall

Why we like it: The VideoSecu ML531BE wall mount is our choice for best tv wall mount, and it is one device that you’ll likely want to consider if you’re looking for a wall mount that has a somewhat low profile. This full-motion mount utilizes an adjustable arm and a four-prong hand. While the design allows for a lot of freedom in movement in all directions, it also creates a bit of a limitation on its weight and how many devices it can cover. The weight limit is fairly low at only 88 pounds and only fits tv wall mount brackets from 100x100mm to 400x400mm. On a similar note, the mount only works for TV sizes that are between 22” to 42”. If your television falls within this somewhat narrow range, you’re likely looking at a product that will suit your needs. The device is a best seller and highly rated among those that purchased it, with a 4.6/5 average rating on Amazon across over 10,00 customer reviews. Because of the smaller device range, it is also much less expensive than a fair number of articulating wall mounts. Overall, that makes this device perfect for small TVs that might sit in places such as kitchens, workrooms, or offices.

The tilt, swivel, and pull-out features on the VideoSecu ML531BE are its crucial draw. The mount can pull television sets from the wall up to 20 inches while retracting to a very low profile of only 1.9 inches. The tilt allows for 5 degrees of backward angle and 15 degrees of forwarding tilt from the axis, while the swivel function gives this device 180 degrees of range. Installation is much more comfortable than with some mounts, as the VESA plate can be removed, attached to the television, and then installed onto the rest of the mount. Included in the whole package are all pieces for mounting this product to a wall, as well as a few extra goodies: A magnetic bubble level and a 10-foot-long HDMI cable.

Customer reviews are not everything, but it is important to note that the VideoSecu ML531BE has some of the best ratings of any mount, despite its limited use. 76% of the reviewers left it a 5/5 rating, with only 9% leaving it a 3 or below. Negative reviews for this product are effectively all over the map and are not entirely trustworthy. Most of the negative reviews amount to installation failures on the part of the customer, and many other customers have responded to identify these installation errors. In one case, a customer attempted to install the product with the base still attached, for example. Another left a negative review after trying to use the mount with a television that was heavier than what the product is rated for. Still, one customer did find that his television did not work with the mount, even though it fits all criteria. This is a scenario in which the VideoSecu says its device works with “most” television sets — but not all. It’s best to do a bit of research to ensure that your television set will work with this mount.

VideoSecu MP502B 3KR Tiling Wall Mount

  • Fits most 37" 40" 42" 46" 47" 50" 52" 55" 58" 60" 62" 63" 65" 70" 75" flat panel screens; VESA compatible VESA 200x200,...
  • Supports screens up to 165 lbs; Solid sturdy wall plate provides strength and durability
  • Rail design allows TV to shift left and right for TV placement adjustment

Why we like it: The VideoSecu Tilt MP502B 3KR is an extremely versatile product and a best seller. The product has consistent reviews on both its functionality and its overall ease of installation. It has managed to maintain a high rating of 4.5/5 stars on Amazon, even after nearly 2,400 customer reviews. Also, a vast majority of those reviews are from customers giving the product a 5/5. This is hard to achieve for any product, which points to the quality of the design and the overall good features you’ll find on this product.

This wall mount is all about the range of use. It holds up to 165 pounds and covers an extensive range of mounting bracket distances. If your TV’s mounting bracket distance is anywhere between 200×100 and 700×400, it’s more likely than not that this mount will hold your TV up good and strong. VideoSecu uses heavy-gauge steel, so the product is rather heavy by itself (12 lbs.). This does, however, add a bit of comfort in knowing that as long as you’ve hung the mount correct (in the studs), you’re not likely to have your TV falling to the ground any time soon.

The distance of this mount from the wall is about 2.2 inches. This is a good mount further from the wall than many other mounts, including the Mounting Dream mount further up on our list. However, the positive in having a larger distance from the wall lies directly in your ability to access the ports in the back of the television, as well as giving any cables a bit of breathing room. The tilting angle goes from 0 to 15 degrees, making the axial tilt on the VideoSecu MP502B 3KR wider than most of its competitors — which does inevitably help draw customers to this product so frequently. The mount allows for left and right shifting of several inches in each direction. Included in the package are a 7-inch HDMI cable, a bubble level and all of the required assembly parts. You’ll still need some of your tools to get it on the wall, but VideoSecu helps get you started in the right direction.

Pros

  • Extensive range of use
  • Extremely popular
  • Good profile distance
  • Inexpensive

Cons

  • Extremely heavy

Mounting Dream MD2268-MK Tilting Wall Mount

Product Info
  • UNIVERSAL DESIGN: Tilt TV wall mount for 26-55 inch TVs weighing up to 88 lbs. Compatible VESA(mounting holes spacing)...
  • SPACE SAVER: Low profile design ensures this TV mount an incredibly thin side profile of just 1.5" from the wall,...
  • REDUCE GLARE: Tired of TV wall mounts without much flexibility for tilting adjustment or reducing glare? Our TV mount...

Mounting Dream seems to make your mounting process a “dream.” We’re just going to guess that that’s what their naming geniuses pitched when the company was formed. Nonetheless, it appears that Mounting Dream has certainly made a lot of people’s mounting dreams come true. The Mounting Dream MD2268-MK is one of their most popular and well-received products, landing a 4.5/5 average star rating with nearly 800 customer reviews (again, mostly positive). Before you start clicking anywhere, note: this product is only designed for 26” – 55” flat screen televisions. If your television is bigger, you’ll want to look at a different product. If you’re interested in the features on the Mounting Dream MD2268-MK, you may want to check out their model for larger TVs, the MD2268-LK.

The MD2268-MK is a low profile tilting wall mount. When fully vertical, it is only 1.5 inches from the wall. The tilt is adjustable after mounting, allowing the MD2268-MK to pitch forward a few degrees, or sit at zero degrees straight up and down. Although not highly advertised, this product also allows for left and right movements from the center point. This comprises about 3-4 inches of movement spaces from left to right. Some users have worried about the possibility of seeing the ungainly brackets hanging off to the sides. However, these are short enough that your TV will cover them completely, even after the lateral movements. Measurement numbers are important, so here we go: The MD2268-MK is VESA certified for up to 100 lbs., and rated to fit four-hole attachments (all in millimeters) of 400×400, 400×300, 400X200, 300X300, 300X200, 200X200, 200X100, 200X150, 100X100 and 75X75. This should cover most TVs in the 26-inch to 55-inch size range, as long as they are VESA certified.

Included in the packaging are a magnetic bubble stud finder level, a 6 inch HDMI cable which supports Ethernet connectivity, and all of the required hardware to put this mount on the wall. This wall mount is designed for studs 16 inches apart. If you’re looking to mount your television, but your studs are 24 inches apart, you’re going to want to use a different model. The MD2268-LK should cover you, or the MD2165-LK. However, do note that both of these cover TVs that are 42”-70”, so if your TV is slightly lower than that, none of these Mounting Dream products will work for you. Just note that as a low profile, tilting mount, you will have less access to the back of the television than with an unmounted television or an articulating wall mount. Most reviews of this product are positive. The negative reviews mostly relate to different issues with the mount’s design or from those who had issues while hanging it. Make sure to follow all instructions, especially when mounting the tilt mechanism, as this appears to be an area where many users got confused and broke the mount.

Pros

  • Very versatile design
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to install

Cons

  • Low weight limit

Sanus MLF13-B1 Full Articulating Wall Mount

Product Info

  • Universal mounting design for TV's & Monitors 37"-80" - even curved TVs .Full-motion TV Mount - No Tools required to...
  • Extends TV/Monitor 14 inches off the wall

Why we like it: The Sanus MLF13-B1 Full Articulating Wall Mount plays right to the desires of those who want a great articulating wall mount but also need something that can hold a good amount of weight. The Sanus MLF13-B1 is not only VESA-certified for a wide range of television sets, but sits as one of the most highly favored wall mounts you’ll find. This product rests comfortably on a 4.7/5 average rating on Amazon and over 100 customer reviews. As an articulating wall mount, the price is on the higher end than you’ll find with most tilt or low-profile mounts, but it does compensate for that fact by providing a fair of amount of versatility and high quality in the materials.

One of the critical benefits and drawing points for the Sanus MLF13-B1 is the ease of use after installation. It requires no tools post-installation, and all adjustments to its position can be down by pulling it into the desired location. This wall mount was designed for monitors that are 37 inches up to 80 inches. This gives the Sanus MLF13-B1 one of the most extensive ranges you’ll find with any wall mounts, and will more likely than not cover the television you’re looking to mount up to the wall. You’ll see that this mount can pull out a full 14 inches from the wall, giving it a vast range, which, when combined with 11 degrees of axial tilting, allows a lot of versatility in the viewing angles. This wall mount holds up to 130 pounds, which is good for the smaller to middle-sized television sets. If you’re reaching closer to the 80-inch limit, you’ll want to be very conscious about the weight of your TV. Older TVs are always more substantial, and while some newer flat screens are weighing in under 130 pounds. With that kind of screen size, if your television is not brand new, you’re going to want to be extra careful.

Perhaps the most negative aspect to this wall mount is the overall limited bracket range. While it can hold TV sets that are 37” to 80” in screen size, the VESA Mounting Standard for this mount only covers three sizes: 300×300, 200×200, 200×100 and 100x100mm. If your TV’s mounting brackets are not one of those four, you’ll need to look elsewhere. If your TV is between 42” and 90”, the Sanus XF229-B1 might be that elsewhere. The product holds up to 175 pounds and can fit mounting distances between 120 x 48 through 850 x 549mm. Just note that the XF229-B1 comes in at a much higher cost, although it does have a wider axial tilt degree and pulls out much further from the wall as well.

The Sanus MLF-B1 is highly favored, but not an easy install. If you do intend on doing all of the work yourself with this one, you’re going to need a lot of tools upfront. This device comes with all of the required parts, but there are more tools required for installing this mount than on most low profile or tilting mounts.

Pros

  • High-quality materials
  • Excellent design and features

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Small usage range
  • Difficult installation

Television Wall Mounts Buyers Guide

Tilt, swivel, or fixed? What about a ceiling mount? How do I get it straight? Seeing an impressively wall-mounted TV can cause a bit of envy, but viewing the wall mounting options and kits can produce its a level of frustration. We’re here to help you break down the sometimes confusing terms into easy-to-digest pieces. You’ll definitely want to read here before you get too sold on any single TV wall mount so that you can ensure an optimal television viewing experience in your home.

Wall Mount Types

The type of wall mount you’re looking for depends on your home setting and how you intend on viewing the TV. If you’re going to look at the screen straight on at all times, you’re likely going to want the best tv wall mount for viewing angle. Meanwhile, if you’re going to look at the screen straight on, but you have a television with a lot of ports in the back and not the side, you’re going to need back access, something that a swivel or tilt mount will provide. Here are some more specific details on each type of wall mount.

Articulating Wall Mounts

If you’ve seen wall mounts that allow the mount to move in almost every direction conceivable, what you were looking at was a full motion or articulating wall mount. These mounts are designed to give you a lot of control over the movement of the television. Typically best for corners, these wall mounts can be utilized in pretty much any corner of the room. You’ll find that articulating wall mounts are also the most expensive, as they are the most complicated in design and the most complicated to put together and mount. Articulating wall mounts come in two basic configurations: dual arm and single arm. Dual arm wall mounts have a more extended reach, are capable of pulling ouch much further from the wall, and have an added expense. This is your best option if you like to have more control over your television viewing location. Do note, however, that because they pull out reasonably far from the wall that they will require a longer cord. These wall mounts cannot handle the heavy weight that comes with an older and larger flat-screen TV, so it’s best only to use this with smaller or lighter flat screens.

Tilting Wall Mounts

A lesser version of the articulating wall mount is the tilting wall mount. These mounts allow you to swivel your television up or down, depending on your preference. Some do allow for left or right tilting. These will not pull out from the wall like articulating wall mounts. Primarily, this is the best option for those that want a low profile television mount, but still want to be able to hook up different electronics, such as gaming consoles, DVRs or cable boxes, in the back at various times. Tilting wall mounts can handle more weight than articulating wall mounts, making them a good option for those that are looking for a little bit of movement but with a television that is a bit too heavy for full motion. Also, if there is a glare on your tv screen, a tilting wall mount will allow you to tilt the TV screen at the perfect viewing angle!

Low Profile Wall Mounts

Low profile wall mounts are the simplest to install and the most common. Many houses and apartments even come with low profile wall mounts pre-installed. These wall mounts act more like a picture frame hanger than anything else, allowing you to mount the flat-screen TV to the wall in a stable, unmoving location. Low profile wall mounts will give you limited access to the area behind the television, so these are not the best to use if you tend to hook a lot of electronics into your HDMI ports. Many television manufacturers are trying to accommodate by putting the ports on the side. However, this is not the case for far too many, so make sure you are fully aware of your television’s input locations before you purchase a low profile wall mount.

What to Look for in a Wall Mount

Wall mounts can come with a lot of different features. Here are some of the most basic features that may interest you while you are shopping for a wall mounted bracket:

Post-mount adjustment

This is a great feature to have in a wall mount. This feature allows you to adjust the height of the mount after it has been installed, freeing you up from having to completely remove and redo the mounting height. If you’re somewhat unsure of your mounting, or you’re new to mounting a television, getting one that allows you to adjust post-installation is a good idea.

Post-mount leveling

If you’re the type of person that can’t stand crooked paintings, this feature is going to be vital to you. Unlike a painting, a wall-mounted television is not merely leveled. If the mount is crooked, the TV will be crooked (at least in the case of low profile or most tilt mounts). If you’re not the best at leveling or afraid you may install the mount unevenly, getting a mount with a post-mount leveling feature is a huge bonus.

Anti-theft Locks

Some wall mounts have features that allow for anti-theft locks to be installed. If you’re worried about losing that expensive television you just purchased, getting a wall mount with a lock is a great idea. At the least, you’ll sleep well knowing that your TV will still be there in the morning–even if your jewelry and other treasured items are not.

VESA Compliance

It is important to make sure you purchase a TV wall mount that is VESA compliant. The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) has developed mounting interface standards for all mounts. You can find a detailed listing of these here. Based on the criteria, all television mounts must comply with certain hole mount sizes and be able to support specific amounts of weight, depending on the size of the television. All newer flat screen televisions can be mounted, and their mounting holes (located on the back in the middle) will have different heights and widths. Often, these height and width are dependent on the screen size and weight. If your mount does not meet the standards, you may need to worry about its ability to hold the weight of your mounted television effectively.

How to Install Your Wall Mount in Two Steps

Before you try to install a wall mount or even purchase one, make sure it comes with all of the necessary hardware for installation. Surprisingly, some wall mounts will sell without all of the equipment, forcing you to buy the parts in pieces from the manufacturer. Your best bet is to buy one that includes everything you need in one package.
Step 1: Studs and Marking
Find the studs in the location you are hanging the television and mark the area with a pencil. Make sure to measure left to right and try to find two adjacent studs, marking the middle point between the two as well.
Step 2: Install
All wall mounts are different, but every wall mount will have screws. Drill the pilot holes based on the prescribed distances your particular mount specifies. Hold the mount to the holes and screw them in to secure the mount to the wall tightly.

By then, you should have a correctly configured wall-mounted TV. For more detailed information, check out this great video.
