Best Refrigerator Water Filter for the Cleanest Water

Home & Kitchen

If you have a refrigerator with an in-door ice maker and water dispenser, you may wonder what contaminants the filter catches. While treated water is free from many contaminants, water treatment plants don’t remove all of them.

Only the impurities that local and federal laws require them to remove are usually the target of water treatments.

Fortunately, a refrigerator water filter can catch many other impurities and remove it from the water used for ice or drinking water. Use these tips to find the best refrigerator water filter to ensure that you and your family are consuming clean water.

Which Impurities do Refrigerator Filters Remove?

Water treatment plants remove many contaminants from the water people drink or use for chores like laundering their clothes. However, they usually only remove those the law requires them too.

To improve the water quality in your home, you may filter water in a pitcher, through a filter attachment on the spout, or a refrigerator water filter if you get ice or drinking water from the door.

Generally, refrigerator filters are better at catching and removing contaminants than water pitchers or filters attached to faucets. Refrigerator filters contain carbon, which is usually activated charcoal, through which the water moves, so the filter can catch contaminants like:

  • Lead
  • Volatile organic compounds
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Chlorine
  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Chemicals

The volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, may include carbon-based compounds like:

  • Carbon monoxide
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Carbonic acid
  • Metallic carbides
  • Ammonium carbonate

Refrigerator water filters do not catch mineral ions like calcium or magnesium, which are vital to the body for proper functioning.

Brand-named water filters for refrigerators can be expensive, costing about $50 to $60 per filter. However, generic water filters exist for fridges that cost much less. However, it is essential to know how to recognize counterfeit filters from the real ones on the market.

Counterfeit water filters may be sold online or in stores, so being able to recognize and avoid them is vital to you and your family's health. Using counterfeit filters can be more harmful than not using a filter at all.

The best way to recognize whether a generic filter is real, or counterfeit is to read the information on the packaging. Real water filters will have certifications on the label to show which contaminants they block or the safety of the filter.

The certification may be from the company whose refrigerator the filter fits or from NSF International, previously known as the National Sanitation Foundation.

The NSF is an organization that develops public health standards and certification programs to protect the world’s supply of food, water, consumer products, and the environment. Their certification label on a water filter will have the organizations name followed by some numbers.

For instance, a label may read NSF 401, 42, and 53 certified. The NSF has certification from the American National Standards Institute or ANSI. So, a label may also read NSF/ANSI 401, 42, and 53 certified. The meaning of the numbers are:

  • 42–This number means the filter removes aesthetic contaminants like chlorine, bad odors, and bad tastes from the water. This certification includes both point-of-use and point-of-entry water filters.
  • 53–On a certification label, this number indicates that it removes a plethora of contaminants from the water, which can include parasites, lead, asbestos, and many others.
  • 372–This number certifies that the filter contains no more than 0.25 percent lead. Most manufacturers meet compliance by using lead-free parts.
  • 401–This number means that trace chemicals and pharmaceuticals get filtered from the water, including emerging contaminants like DEET, ibuprofen, BPA, and many others.

How to Determine the Water Filter Size

Refrigerator Water Filter Replacement For Models UKF8001, 4396395,...

It’s important to get the right water filter for your refrigerator, which is easy to do. All you need is the model number of the appliance to look up the filter size. Most refrigerators have a single water filter that installs at the back of the machine near the bottom of it.

However, many new refrigerators have a second filter inside the main component, located on the top, at the back.

This water filter is often longer and thinner than the primary filter and looking up the model number should tell you the sizes of both filters. There is a release button for removing it, and once it's in hand, you can clean it or replace it with a new one if it's too dirty to clean.

After removing it, dump any debris in the filter into a bag, so it doesn’t get sent back into the water supply, where it will need to undergo treatment again.

Usually, this filter may only need to be rinsed out and allowed to dry for an hour or so. You can use a gentle cleaner like vinegar, rubbing alcohol, or mild liquid soap to help get it clean as well.

If there is a lot of debris in the filter, after dumping it out, you should allow the filter to soak for 10 to 15 minutes in a mixture of water and gentle cleanser. Then, let it thoroughly dry before replacing it.

Buyers Guide

The easiest way to ensure that you’re getting the right replacement filter is to look up the model number of the refrigerator or filter online. Many sellers of the filters will let you enter the number of your model, which then pulls up all the filters that are compatible with it.

Carefully read the information online, or the labels on the packaging, to ensure that the filter you're getting has NSF certifications to filter contaminants that can affect your health, the smell, and taste of the water and the parts that the manufacturers use. If you don’t see these certifications, then don’t buy the filter as it could be counterfeit and put your and your family’s health at risk.
