Best Natural and Organic Baby Wipes: Top 10 Options

Kids & Baby

All moms and dads want to do what's best for their babies, especially when they're doing the parenting thing for the first time. Although many people who prefer a more natural approach to parenting would like not to use disposable baby wipes at all, their convenience often outweighs the downsides.

To help you find the best natural baby wipes we’ve created a list of some of our favorites with details on each to help you decide if they are right for you.

This list contains wipes that are biodegradable, made from bamboo or organic cotton, and that don’t contain harsh toxins that could hurt your baby’s sensitive bottom.

Throughout the rest of this article, you’ll find out how we chose the ratings for each of our wipes, learn more about what we like about each wipe versus what the manufacturers could work on, and get a useful buyer’s guide to help you decide which wipes will work best for you and your little one.

How We Chose Our Ratings

Project Nursery Registry

We wanted to showcase wipes that didn’t contain heavy toxins and parabens that can ultimately harm your child.

We looked at the ingredients in all of the wipes on our list and rated those with the fewest potentially harmful preservatives higher than those that contain one or two questionable ingredients.

We also put eco-friendliness at the top of our priority list. Although to be truly eco-friendly you’d probably have to use a washcloth and water; we wanted to find the closest possible alternatives in disposable form.

Things like what the wipe is made from and how long it will take to biodegrade made an impact on our ratings because of this focus.

Finally, we took sensitivity into account by looking at scented versus unscented options, free and clear options, and other designations that made the wipes great for babies with skin sensitivities or allergies.

This also meant looking at material for the gentlest possible wipe base so that your baby doesn’t feel irritation from the wipe, but instead feels comfort in the process.

Top 10 Best Natural and Organic Baby Wipes

Now that you understand a little bit more about how we choose our ratings for these wipes let’s jump right into our reviews.

We have ten of the best natural baby wipes we could find on this list, and we know that at least one of them is sure to work for you and your little one.

WaterWipes Sensitive Baby Wipes

WaterWipes Unscented Baby Wipes, Sensitive and Newborn Skin, 12 Packs...
  • Simply two ingredients: Our fragrance-free baby wipes contain 99.9% water with just a drop of fruit extract
  • Ideal for sensitive skin: Waterwipes baby wipes are gentle enough for premature, infant, and newborn skin
  • Simple & clean: Vegan society accredited baby wipes are hypoallergenic and contain no parabens or sulphates to irritate...

If we had a nickel for every mom who recommended these wipes, we would be very rich. These are highly rated wipes in mother’s forums and consumer reviews all over the place, and we can see why.

Touted as “the world’s purest wipe,” Water Wipes contain only water and grapefruit seed extract. They contain absolutely no preservatives, parabens, or toxins of any kind.

We love that these wipes are around the same price as the less-than-natural products you’ll find more readily on big box store shelves, but much better for your baby.

We also love that they are perfect for babies with sensitive skin, since there are literally zero irritants (unless your baby is allergic to grape seed).

Our one major issue with these wipes is that they can develop mold once they’re open if not used quickly or if you use a wipe warmer due to their lack or preservatives.

The Honest Company Baby Wipes

The Honest Company, Baby Wipes, Hypoallergenic Honest Wipes,576 Count
  • Honestly clean: Honest wipes provide the convenience of a disposable cloth baby wipe in a hypoallergenic and plant-based...
  • Pure & gentle: These hypoallergenic, dermatologist-tested wipes contain more than 99% water, making them gentle enough...
  • Made without: Alcohol, parabens, chlorine processing or fragrances.

The Honest Company is pretty hit or miss with the pureness of their products, but we feel like their baby wipes are one area where they are still winning.

If you’re looking for durability in your wipe over eco-friendliness, this is definitely a good alternative for you. These wipes can stand up to even the most intense of blowouts.

These wipes once again contain silver dihydrogen citrate, which scares away some consumers, but we promise it’s not a bad thing.

Honest even goes so far as to ensure that the silver they use contains no nanoparticles that can be harmful to you or your child. These are a more expensive brand, so if you’re budget conscious, buying on sale is your best bet.

Jackson Reece Baby Wipes

Jackson Reece Herbal Baby Wipes--10 x Packs of 64 (640 Wipes)
  • Jackson Reece Kinder by Nature Herbal Baby WIpes
  • Natural herbal baby wipes ideal for children with sensitive skin and eczema
  • More than 99% of the ingredients come from natural vegetable or plant extracts

This is one of our favorite baby wipes ever. Not only are they completely non-toxic with a very short list of ingredients that include essential oils as the only fragrances in the not unscented variety, but they are also biodegradable and compostable.

These wipes are thicker than you’d expect for an eco-friendly wipe and offer the perfect amount of wetness to clean your baby without feeling like you need to dry them off afterward.

These wipes are made in the UK, so they can be a bit more difficult to find in the US. However, you can buy them in bulk on Amazon and other sites, so they are still fairly easy to come by for online shoppers.

As a bonus, these wipes are considered vegan-friendly, so if your lifestyle dictates your use of vegan products, you’ll love these wipes. They can be a bit pricey though, so be sure to shop for sales or buy in bulk.

Seventh Generation Baby Wipes

Seventh Generation Baby Wipes, Free & Clear Unscented and Sensitive,...
  • Seventh generation free and clear sensitive baby wipes are made for your child's sensitive skin
  • Thick and soft baby wipes for a gentle clean that is safe for baby, hands, and face
  • Our unscented baby wipes are fragrance free, alcohol free, paraben free, and phenoxyethanol free

As a brand, Seventh Generation has had some trouble keeping up with the best of the best natural and organic products since Unilever purchased them in 2016, but we still think their free and clear baby wipes deserve a spot on our list.

These wipes do contain sodium benzoate, which is an ingredient we like to avoid when we can, but these still score well on sites that test product toxicity, so we’re letting it slide here.

We love that these wipes are fragrance-free and made from thick, soft material that won’t upset or irritate your baby. We also like that these wipes don’t contain alcohol that can dry out your child’s skin with repeated use.

These wipes are less expensive than many on our list and are available almost everywhere, so they are a great first step into the natural wipe world.

Bum Boosa Bamboo Baby Wipes

Bum Boosa Bamboo Baby Wipes - Natural Scent, Eco- Friendly (6 Packs/80...
  • BumBoosa Baby Wipes are made with 100% viscose from bamboo and contain nourishing plant-based ingredients.
  • Organic Aloe Vera, Calendula extract, Chamomile extract, and pure grade essential oils come together to lend their...
  • No alcohol, paraben, phthalate and sulfate.

We love these bamboo baby wipes for their eco-consciousness and plant-based formula. The wipes are thick and strong, but soft so they won’t irritate baby’s skin. These wipes are scented, but only with essential oils, which eases our minds.

They do contain citric acid, which might cause some irritation on certain children, so make sure you try them out before you buy them in bulk. Our primary concern with these wipes is the price.

These are one of the most expensive wipes on our list, and although we are sure that the bamboo material is worth the extra money, we know that not everyone can afford to put that much cash into a product that parents go through so quickly.

Babyganics Baby Wipes, Unscented, 400 Count
  • For use from top to bottoms
  • Formulated without: Parabens, sulfates, phthalates, artificial dyes or fragrances
  • Formulated with plant derived ingredients

Another widely available baby wipe with a lot to love is this wipe by Babyganics. We don’t always love Babyganics products since they can sneak some toxins in from time to time, but their wipes are winners.

The only ingredient we’re hesitant on is sodium benzoate, but the rest are plant-derived and non-toxic.

These wipes are great for faces and hands once your baby is out of diapers too, so don’t feel like you can’t buy in bulk. We love that these wipes are inexpensive, but still offer the kind of protection for sensitive skin that you’ll find in more expensive brands.

Earth's Best TenderCare

Earth's Best TenderCare Unscented Chlorine-Free Baby Wipes, 72 Count...
  • Includes (12) packs of 72 Earth's Best TenderCare Unscented Chlorine Free Wipes
  • Alcohol free and chlorine free
  • Enriched with aloe vera and vitamin E

These wipes are another unscented variety for sensitive babies and parents. They are thick and cloth-like, so they’ll stand up to even the toughest of messes, and they feature aloe vera and vitamin E to help soothe diaper rashes or other skin conditions.

If you like a sudsier feel to your wipes, you may like these better than some others on our list.

Our primary concern with these wipes is their use of alkyl polyglycoside, which has few if any, safety tests out for the public to see.

Although we don’t know that this ingredient adds toxicity, we don’t like not having all of the information before buying, so these wipes aren’t getting as high a rating as they could without the added preservatives.

Caboo Tree-Free Bamboo

Caboo Tree-Free Bamboo Baby Wipes, Eco-Friendly Naturally Derived Baby...
  • 🌳🙌 TREE FREE, ECO-FRIENDLY baby wipes made from viscose derived from sustainably grown bamboo, bamboo grows...
  • 👶👌 MADE SAFE CERTIFIED naturally derived baby wipes made with safe ingredients that are 99.3% naturally derived,...
  • 🌎 ❤️ EARTH FRIENDLY, plant based alternative to traditional tree based baby wipes - bamboo grasses grow back in...

Wipes made from bamboo are naturally better for the environment than those that are derived from cotton and other “trees.” They can biodegrade quicker than most wipes and are compostable within 28 days.

As a bonus, the packaging is even 100% recyclable, so these win out as the most eco-friendly option on our list of natural wipes. As a double bonus, Caboo is considered a panda friendly product, so they aren’t stealing bamboo from our furry friends.

We love the ingredients in these wipes for the most part. These do contain both polysorbate 20 and phenoxyethanol, which we try to avoid in our products, but the rest of the ingredients are fantastic, and the eco-friendliness of these wipes earns them a spot on our top ten list.

Natracare Organic Cotton

Natracare Organic Cotton Baby Wipes, 50 Count (Pack of 16)
  • Suitable for sensitive skin
  • Ph balanced & alcohol free
  • No Sodium Lauryl sulfate (SLS), parabens or MIT

These wipes are the only ones on our list made with 100% organic cotton. They are also certified as non-toxic through independent testing and highly rated in the natural community.

We love that they are biodegradable and compostable and that Natracare is a female-owned business that prides itself on bringing the best of the best to the table.

We don’t love all of the ingredients in these Natracare wipes, especially the perfume. Fragrance is often a cover for synthetic and toxic ingredients that can cause harm to people with skin sensitivities.

Based on their test ratings, it doesn’t seem like that’s the case here, but we still think it’s appropriate to warn parents who are looking for an ultra-pure wipe.

How to Choose the Right Baby Wipes

When you’re looking for the best natural baby wipes it’s important to keep a couple of questions in mind:

  • Are any of the ingredients in these wipes toxic or carcinogenic?
  • Are these wipes biodegradable or compostable?
  • What’s my budget?
  • Do I want to use these wipes for more than just diaper area cleanup?
  • Are these wipes readily available in a pinch?

Asking yourself these questions can help you to narrow down which wipes will work best for you.

As you read in our top ten list, some of the best products are only available online, which might not work for you if you didn’t realize you were getting low.

Some products are also much more expensive than the lower rated brands, so you’ll want to be prepared to budget for those if you plan to use them exclusively.

As far as ingredients go, we try to avoid the following because they can cause harm to some sensitive skin or can be carcinogenic:

As far as ingredients go, we try to avoid the following because they can cause harm to some sensitive skin or can be carcinogenic:

  • Polysorbate 20
  • 2-Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1,3-Diol
  • Tocopheryl Acetate
  • Fragrance
  • Phthalates
  • Phenoxyethanol

Quite often these ingredients are snuck into organic or natural wipes as preservatives or skin conditioners.

Remember that the terms natural and organic are not well regulated yet, so there is a lot of wiggle room for companies who want to go for cheaper, but potentially harmful ingredients.

It’s best to do your research before you purchase any product, even if it claims to fall into these categories.
