With so many types of watches out there, making a choice requires a consideration of the specifications provided by the manufacturer and general insight about the product from customers who already purchased them.

These are the same standards we follow whenever we search for a product, but because we’re talking about our kids, we took our search a step further.

We believe the best kids watches reflect a child’s best interests. To us, that means finding watches with features that are useful for kids but don’t work against parent’s wishes (i.e., adding a new avenue for screen time).

As a result, we only included watches that feature kid-appropriate features and a set of parental controls so that parents can stay on top of their kids’ use.

In addition to the unique watch face that tells both the time and date, your child will enjoy an interactive experience that tracks not only their activity but their chores. Their watch becomes your personal assistant.

The watch pairs with a dedicated Garmin app that allows both parents and children to check up on their score. Parents can add chore data, and new chores show up on the kids’ band—no nagging required. You can use it for big chores or even as daily reminders for the little things like brushing their teeth.

Does your child like to put off chores until the last minute? Add a task timer to send them notifications that the time left to do their homework or complete their duties is running out.

The vivofit jr also sets 60-minute daily activity goals designed to keeps kid active. It tracks steps, activities, and even their sleep habits. When the app sees they met their goals, it unlocks fun games like a mobile adventure trail or fun facts for rewards.

As kids knock down each goal, they ten collect virtual coins that they trade in for real-world rewards like extra screen time.

You can even add multiple children to the app to keep track of all your kids in one place.

It's already clear that we love this watch, but we also love that it doesn’t require charging. It runs for a full year without ever needing a USB charger. It’s even swimming pool-friendly and comes in a one-size-fits-all elastic size for kids between four and nine. Older kids can buy the XL accessory band or the vivofit 3 band ensure a snug fit.

We love the watch because its both low maintenance and interactive, which is precisely what you need as you try to juggle school, work, life, and getting your steps in.

Do you love your smartwatch? If so, you keep kids far from it. Now, they can have their own kid-friendly smartwatch, so yours is finally safe.

The Vtech Kidizoom Smartwatch DX2 is a simplified smartwatch with time-telling features as well as two cameras that take photos and videos. They also come with cute, kid-appropriate wristbands that are easy to change out.

Kids new to telling time will enjoy the 55 watch faces divided up between digital and analog. Vtech releases new watch faces online that add new games or seasonal functions to the watch. Each of the different faces will improve their confidence when asked to read the clock while also keeping them engaged. There’s even a time-telling mode that speaks the time for you—perfect for younger learners.

The watch is splash-proof, but you need to make sure they leave it behind before taking a bath or shower or going for a swim.

In addition to the camera, the watches come with games to play. If you worry about even more screens, there’s no need to fret. Simply head into the Parental Control settings to either set a time limit on daily gameplay or disable the games altogether.

Each watch gets its power from a lithium-ion battery, so it requires time on a charger just like your watch does.

We love this watch because it offers the features kids love about their parents’ smartwatches, but it focuses on their needs like learning to tell time. Plus, any worries parents have are easily satisfied in the parental control section.

The Topffy Smartwatch is another smart product that blends the Garmin and VTech products in one.

Its multi-function operation includes a watch face, cameras, music player, fitness tracker, and sleep monitoring. It also connects to their mobile phones to remind them of notifications and allows them to dial out via Bluetooth.

It’s compatible with most of the latest phone models from iPhone 5 and up and the latest Samsung Galaxy phones from 3 onwards. You can also connect it to some models from the following manufacturers:

  • HTC
  • Huawei
  • Lenovo
  • LG
  • OPPO
  • Sony
  • Xiaomi

Because it comes with so many more functions, we recommend this watch for older kids who want a smartwatch but who aren’t ready for a premium brand like an Apple Watch.

It includes many features, and it won’t necessarily get them in trouble, but there is a lack of parental control for screen time. It also relies heavily on your mobile device, which makes it overkill for younger kids without cell phones or tablets.

Let’s get back to basics and away from even more ways for our kids to sneak in screen time.

The KIDPER Kids Digital Watch is a basic sport watch that has all kinds of indoor and outdoor uses. It is the watch that most closely resembles the watches you grew up with and loved.

It offers a digital watch face as well as a stopwatch, alarm, and chronograph. The LED backlight helps kids see the watch in the dark, and the durable rubber strap means it keeps up with even the most active kids.

This basic sports watch is easy to set up and operate and requires no parental controls. It is waterproof up to 5 meters (just don’t press any buttons under water). The digital face also means any timekeeping is accurate.

If you want a simple watch with just enough functionality for a foot race, then this practical option will win you over. It’s proof that kids don’t need Bluetooth to find happiness.

  • ★Comfortable Watch Band & Hardness Glass Mirror★:High quality watch band, reinforced resin band design is more...

The XFCS is another simple watch that mirrors the KIDPER watch, but it features a more design-friendly aesthetic (i.e., it’s cuter).

This outdoor digital sports watch shares the time and date and includes an alarm (including an hourly alert). You can also switch between 12 and 24-hour format, which makes it an easy way to teach growing kids to read military time.

Every watch comes with an LED light that switches between seven colors on the watch face. Hold down the light button for three seconds to switch between colors and get a new watch. Available watch face colors include:

  • Green
  • Dark blue
  • Sky blue
  • Red
  • Pink
  • Purple
  • Orange

The watch band is also available in several colors including:

  • Red
  • Blue
  • Orange
  • Black
  • Rose and Blue
  • Rose and Purple

Each band adjusts to fit the wrists of children between three and 15. It’s easily adjustable via a stainless-steel buckle and is lightweight enough to wear all day.

It’s also waterproof up to 50 meters, and you can wear it in the shower (just avoid pushing any buttons).

We like that the watch is simple, but it’s still great for learning time because the watch face is large and easy to decipher. It’s also easy to set-up, which allows kids to take ownership of their new watch quickly.

The last watch on our list is a smartwatch designed for with features for kids and parents. Its multi-function nature means you can add a SIM card to make calls, communicate through an app, and use the camera functions.

We like this watch in particular because it uses a GPS function that allows you to track your child’s location. You’ll use the combination of the smart watch’s 2G connection and the SeTracker2 app to track their position, and it shows up in real time.

The tracking function is simple to use, but it does depend somewhat on the coverage provided by the SIM card inserted.

We also like that the watch is waterproof, which prevents any bath-time or swimming mishaps. It also includes other kid-proof features include parental controls that cover almost every feature of the watch from calls to GPS.

The watch comes in only blue or pink, but it does come in two shades of each color. You may find some issues with precise accuracy when coordinating the GPS, but it generally gets the correct general location even if it can’t pinpoint the child’s whereabouts exactly.

How to Find Kids Watches: Features You Need

Kids watches are so much more complicated than they were when you were growing up. So how do you cut through all the gadget features to find what you need?

In our opinion, there are only three features that ever watch needs:

  • Kid-friendly design
  • Parental control
  • Fun features

Kid-Friendly Design

Kid-friendly design means meeting two criteria: it must look cool, and it must hold up to kids’ use.

We recommend choosing watches that feature neutral designs in plenty of colors so that you can choose their favorite color. Playful colors and simple design make sure they’ll love it today—and tomorrow.

For younger kids, go for a youthful design with cute animations. However, start to steer clear of these once they hit 11 or 12 when their watch becomes less like a toy and more like an accessory.

Additionally, kid-friendly design means comfortable bands and watch faces (i.e., nothing too tight or bulky) and water-proof measures. You’ll need to buy an old school watch to make it safe for swimming, but make sure whatever smartwatch or fitness watch you buy stands up to rain, puddles, and even the shower.

Parental Control

If the watch connects to an app, the internet, or just has a screen, make sure it also comes with plenty of parental control options.

These controls not only allow you to track your child, but they aid in preventing your child from getting in trouble with any game or calling features.

These are invaluable, and we never recommend a smartwatch without at least a basic form of control.

Fun Features

Finally, make sure it includes features kids find fun.

Remember that kids don’t need game apps for fun. They’ll find hours of fun with the stopwatch feature alone.

We recommend choosing a watch that has their favorite features included but also veers away from problem areas. For example, skip a watch that contains games if you already struggle with screen time issues.
